An Application
GE 15:10 is weird to modern readers but was perfectly normal at the time: a ritual of covenant, a legal contract system God used as something Abram would be comfortable with. Except in GE 15:17, normally it was the weaker of the two parties who humbled themself and walked through the sacrafice halves, but God did to recommit His promise to Abram. God cares for you and me, too. He's still the same God and still longs for a relationship with each of us, that's why He gave us His word, and JN 3:16.
Connect the Dots
GE 15:1, through his great victory over 4 kings (GE 14:15) Abram had become a military target, but he lived in tents, not a fortified city (GE 13:18) so God would be his protection. / GE 15:5 was biologically literal but also MT 3:9, RO 9:8, GAL 3:7. / We'll be reminded of GE 15:6 in ROM 4:3 & JAS 2:23. / GE 15:12 was a realization that he was in the presence of God, compare IS 6:5. / The prophecy of GE 15:13 will be fulfilled in EX 12:40-41 and be remembered in AC 7:6 and GAL 3:17.
